The times are changing and so is the season.

What felt like the longest winter in history (don’t fact-check us on that) has slowly and thankfully morphed into the very promising start of spring. As we try and navigate the changing world we live in amid economical, emotional and mental stressors, the one thing that is a constant is the changing of the seasons and the continuing need to care for our animals. The barn is a safe haven among the chaos; the smells and noises remind us that our horses rely on us as much as we rely on everyone playing their part to flatten the curve and slow down the spread of COVID-19.

As the season changes from winter to spring it is important to look at the feeding plan for your horse and adjust it accordingly to activity level, age and health status. With the emergence of new grass growing in the field and changing your rations, your horses hind gut microbiome will need to adapt. Sudden changes to the diet as well as environmental and physiological stressors can wreak havoc on the hind gut and create an acidosis condition, lowering the pH in the gut causing the loss of important beneficial bacteria needed for digestion and immune function.

Daily use of Equine Choice Prebiotic + Probiotic in your horses feed will assist in maintaining a healthy hind gut microbiome and help your horse adjust to the changing season and feed.

For those horses that are out on pasture or not on a daily ration the use of Equine Choice Prebiotic + Probiotic Paste at a dose rate of 20 ml over 4 days will help your horses hind gut adapt to the seasonal changes. If your horse gets loose manure with the addition of new grass in their diet the use of Equine Choice Prebiotic + Probiotic Paste will help resolve the problem and restore a healthy microbiome.

Changes to feed and diet work best when we take the time to slowly introduce or change over from other products. This may be the time to reevaluate your strategy.
